Blue Turtle
Newport, RI
Hi! My wife (Joy) and I live and sail on our 1978 CSY 44 Walkover, Blue Turtle. Members of the SSCA and YCA, always happy to meet fellow sailors! Come say hello if you’re nearby. I also occasionally crew on deliveries, and have experience along the entirety of the Atlantic ICW, and from the USVI to Florida.
Watching the sun set over the mountains of Cuba, en route to FL from STT.
Crew on a Fontaine Pajot Tanna 47, from St. Thomas to Fort Lauderdale. Gorgeous weather, good winds, and a pleasant end-of-trip Gulf Stream boost!
Final day on this delivery! Easy sailing, gorgeous Florida weather, and a great end to a great trip.
Continuing the southerly push! Short day, staged week for my final few days on this delivery.
Another big delivery push - not how I’d sail if it wasn’t on the clock, but good miles done. GA on the ICW just isn’t that hard! Left in the fog, arrived in the rain.
Long day, but truly cranking along. No real issues at either Hell Gate or Little Mud River, thanks to Bob’s track.
Easy-peasy, today, in advance of yet another winter gale. Holed up just south of Savannah. Took a nice bike ride after arriving!
Lay day while riding out a gale, then a 90nm push from 5:30am until 5:30pm. Awesome day, great weather, and great progress!
Very, very shallow water on the way down - be especially careful coming from Georgetown. Depths of 4-5’ just north of Cape Romain. Otherwise a great segment - warm weather, clear-ish skies, and a big city destination.
Not quite a lay day, but a short staging hop before pushing to Charleston.
Another good segment down - tons of bridges today! Finally got into the swamps and backwaters, and it’s a different world.
Easy motoring, bitterly cold. The Cape Fear River was beautiful, and there are still leaves on the deciduous trees! Southport is a nice little town; if you stay at Morningstar Marina, walk over to Potter’s Seafood and avail yourself of some sushi-grade fresh fish!
Staging ourselves for heading further south - surprisingly nice marina at Harbour Village Marina in Hampstead, NC. Another day of dolphin sightings!
Holed up in Oriental for the night, and rode out the gale. Headed out from Oriental Marina at 11, gusting to 40kts as we crossed the Neuse River, and settled right down once we were south of it. Gorgeous day, warmest yet at 59F. Saw the first dolphins of the trip!
