Post Storm Paddle

We rocked and rolled in the Marina all night, but it’s calm now with North winds, though the water is still murky from last nights turbulence. Kinda slack tide right now, so no big pushes, but the dying N wind did make for a few fun slow motion surfs when I was Southbound. Always good to see the USCG out cruising the channel 🫡

Lunch SUP - Not a North Wind for a change!

The SE breeze felt “warm”, almost spring like, at least compared to the last 4 days of arctic air we’ve been getting. So didn’t mind the headwind against current conditions to Turn Island which was bumpy and slow. Snuck up on a pack of 7 Otters. I’ve found if they spot you standing up, they’ll leave right away, but if get down and stop paddling and glide towards them, I can get pretty close before they spot me. Especially if it’s rough or very rainy because of all the noise.

High Pressure Lunch SUP

The high pressure brought out the sun and the cold wind. Really fun downwinder today. The first 1/3rd of the ebb stretched out the N chop just right for a while to get some fun, fast glides. Worth the crawl upwind and against current. First time busting out the baklava for the year. Wanted to keep going, but cut it short and headed for the harbor to make a work meeting 👎🏻

North wind created the usually sloppy choppy conditions near shore, but out in the channel it got much more organized. Took a wide route on the ebb current, ferrying across the current. Not an ideal course but it was good practice. Loving the winter ferry schedule, lots of time to cross the lanes.

The ebb current push was nice, but rough and cold against the SE head wind. Not big seas rough, but noisy micro chop rough, that never lets the board settle down. It was tiring to stay with my legs still sore from the gym, but the sunshine helped once it came out from behind the clouds and I finally got in a groove.

Trying out the live tracking! Also happy to see max speed and moving time data added! Hopefully this will improve my average speed 😜 Was a little early to get any ebb current push from Cattle Pass on the return leg, though my speed did gradually increase once I got around Turn Rock. It was so nice out though I didn’t mind the extra time out there. Was able to sneak up on my favorite thing today, a bird on a log, and get a photo. Usually they fly away as soon as I get the camera out, but this guy was chill 😎

Sunday SUP - Suffer Fest

First 10 miles were pretty placid, the rest was tortuously slow. Wasn’t expecting the North wind to pick up as much, and never found the recirc current to help out on the way back. I did enjoy the rainbow, but that was an exceptionally difficult paddle. Also portaged across the road from Fisherman’s Bay, which I had been wanting to do for some time. Got a tasty treat back at the boat too!

It was a bit chilly today and I thought about staying cozy inside instead of paddling. And I would have missed an encounter with two lone whales going their separate ways. One Humpback and a transient Orca. Turn up the volume! I didn’t just see that Humpback, I heared and felt it! Almost seemed like his vocalizations were reverberating off the rocks behind me 😇

Saturday SUP around Henry Island

I was nervous about the weather but it was a good time. Current was against me going up the West side and the wind didn’t turn up enough to push me against it, so I hugged the cliffs searching for eddies. The reverb off the cavernous cliffs turned out to be really fun, constantly changing elevation, strange gurgling and booming sounds from the small caves, and even sneaking a few glides off the reverb in spots. The west side of this island is gorgeous, I definitely should paddle around it more often in 2025

Amazing day for paddling, calm seas and short sleeves in December. Headed north and up Wasp Passage to tour Victim and Double island before going against the current through Pole Pass. Lunch SUP to Neck Point AB

Gray skies, slight SE breeze, but more SW near the harbor. Reached Point Caution without much trouble, then tried to keep a good ferry angle across the Channel, so as not to give up much Northward progress. Continued North close to Shaw thanks to the high tide. From Neck Point to the harbor had small but splashy chop, and some unexpected rain drops fell sporadically.
