A sunny and windy Fourth of July! Today students Chris and Bidur joined us for our first day of ASA 103 - Basic Cruising as we took out Maxime for a long Boston Harbor sail. We did tons of tacking and gybing with both students taking turns navigating us around some tricky waters. A great sailing day!

Visual navigation, or using just the chart and our eyes to navigate, is critical when you are tacking upwind through a narrow passage. Navigator Chris and helmsman Bidur are doing a great job with a ton of communication between them. Critical Points: 1) Always scanning the horizon for landmarks and obstacles 2) Constant communication between the helmsman who is sailing close hauled and the navigator, especially when the wind shifts and the heading of the boat has to change. 3) The navigator needs to avoid getting tunnel vision and only looking at the chart. It’s important to keep your head out of the boat and stay one tack ahead of your current position 4) Using two objects that you can see on the chart and also in real life to get a sense of scale for the chart
