Tomouutea, French Polynesia

May 20, 2025 - Jun 9, 2025

We had a fantastic trip that primarily involved sailing with minimal motoring. We encountered a few hiccups, such as a torn sail and issues with our starboard fuel tank. We just dropped anchor in the Bay of Virgins, Fatu Hiva.

Last night of our passage

Jun 9, 2025 3:38 AM

We have 50 nautical miles to go before making landfall in the Marquesas! Unfortunately, we have had to take in the sail and will be motoring for the remainder of the passage. Fortunately, we have a beautiful full moon to guide us the rest of the way.

Autopilot glitches

Jun 6, 2025 2:51 PM

Our autopilots are experiencing an intermittent issue that's causing a slight zigzag in our course. We're getting closer to our destination, less than 400 miles away, and we believe tensioning the steering lines, which resolved this in the past, will likely fix it again. In the meantime, the sky views remain incredible!

About last night…

After conducting my usual radar check and scanning the perimeter, I felt satisfied that everything was functioning properly. However, when I stepped inside to plug in my phone, the autopilot disengaged, which is an intermittent issue we’ve been having. As a result, the boat lurched off course, and I found myself staring at a spinnaker flapping on the wrong side, now with a brand-new tear in it. Rick, who is a light sleeper, came running out to help. The sail was furled, the main was raised, and the jib was let out. It looks like another project in paradise awaits!

Although it was a slow day for dolphins and whales, a beautiful rainbow of colors awaited us at the end of the day.

We've had a lovely trip so far. The sails have been up for the majority of the trip and the seas have been comfortable.
