Hot Springs Cove Campsite, Alberni-Clayoquot, British Columbia, Canada

Aug 12, 2025 - Aug 15, 2025

Two nights in Bodega Cove with a backtrack to to Tahsis to get Internet for telehealth, then to Hot Springs Cove on Thursday. Which was a mistake. Turns out just because the 50km grid wind forecast I can get from the Iridium says we'll have just 11-13 knots doesn't mean that is true near land... 20-25 knot winds upwind around the Hesquiat Peninsula made for a rough day. But we arrived safely and are settling in to relax.

Trip Updates

The wind predictions were very wrong today

Aug 15, 2025 12:48 AM

49.3535, -126.4516

Instead of 11 knots we've been getting >20, and it didn't pick up like that until it would have been worse to just turn around. Sailed for a while until things got a bit out of hand and the wind was in our face; tacking in these conditions instead of motoring straight to our next anchorage didn't seem like a good idea so we're just powering through it. Thankfully we're no longer stuffing our bow on the waves, though we're getting a lot of spray over the deck. Very thankful for the cockpit enclosure, this would be much more miserable without it. Had to go forward while tethered in to re-secure the anchor after a few violent waves, and the anchor caused some cosmetic damage on the bow that I'll need to inspect once we've set anchor. Sometimes you just learn the hard way!
