This morning started off slowly. The forecast warned of rough seas and waves along our route, so we decided to give ourselves a “free” morning: a relaxed wake-up, an unhurried breakfast, and one last stroll through town to pick up some local delicacies. Before leaving Carloforte we also took care of Myrtus: refilled water and fuel, tidied up the lines in the cockpit, cleaned the cabins and common areas, and gave the deck a good rinse with fresh water. Around midday we set sail! The first miles under motor, then finally the sails went up and we settled into a nice close-hauled course. We were sailing well: with steady true wind, reaching 7–8 knots came easily. At one point, however, the captain warned us:
“Once we pass that reef, we’ll start dancing with the waves!”
And so it was! Beyond the headland we were met with waves not too high, but still around a meter, sometimes more. In the cockpit there was a mix of excitement and a touch of apprehension as we rose and fell with each wave. After a few miles, though, the crew felt like relaxing. Together with the captain we tried heading for Piscinnì beach, but with those sea and wind conditions it was impossible to enjoy a peaceful swim. After checking in by radio with another crew from our group, we made one last attempt at a spot closer to the port. There, finally, the water was calm enough for a refreshing swim. The stop was short: we knew that in just a few hours the port where we would spend the night would no longer offer assistance to incoming boats. So, after half an hour of relaxation, we entered Porto Teulada.
There we enjoyed a cheerful aperitif and ended the day with a shared dinner together in the cockpit.
