Five years after Hurricane Dorian, Grand Bahama still resembles a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie. The devastation to both nature and homes is hard to comprehend, and the slow pace of recovery highlights just how difficult it is to rebuild and regrow—if it ever fully happens. Large stretches of the island’s east side remain far from what they once were, with abandoned buildings and empty lots scattered throughout. Nearly all the fir trees were wiped out, leaving the landscape forever changed.
