Amsterdam
We are a British/Australian couple living in Amsterdam. A decade ago we went on our first sailing adventure from Dubrovnik to Split. We were unaware that it would ignite our longing for the sea and a new desire to travel by harnessing the wind. Life suddenly seemed pretty flat if we were going to spend it all on shore. So, we immediately dreamed of owning our own sailboat. Over the following years we took steps to turn our dream into our reality. We worked hard to gain experience and to build our savings. In 2023, we took a giant leap and purchased our own sailboat, a Contest 45CS. We wanted a yacht that we can grow into. She is far more capable than we are and can take us wherever we dare to go in the world. Eventually we will cast off the lines with the intent to explore further seas. For now, we will continue to work and to explore the Netherlands. We love being surrounded by the tall ships, visiting all of the historic harbour towns, becoming familiar with locks, planning passages around the Wadden Sea Islands, and spending days learning to sail in the variable winds. It's a fun sailing playground for us to get to know our boat and to prepare her for the journeys ahead.

A beautiful sunrise followed by 11+ hours of motoring through the Kiel Canal.
A relatively calm North Sea made for a pleasant and busy passage to Cruxhaven.
We left Borkum at sunrise. When approaching Helgoland, we were greeted by the towering red sandstone cliffs that were in stark contrast to the endless blue horizon. There is a beautiful walk across the upper plateau ushered by the red brick path. We found ourselves surrounded by blooming spring wildflowers and the raucous cries of thousands of seabirds. The northern gannets are the stars, with their black-tipped wings, piercing blue eyes, graceful flying and precision diving.
