SV Jollydogs
Seattle, Washington
Full time liveaboard on our catamaran (SV Jollydogs) since September 2023, with husband Kevin and dogs Lucy and Zeus. Full time dog mom, as well as navigator, route-planner, and organizational paradigm creator. We left Seattle in September of 2023 and immediately headed out and south along the western coast of the US. Most recently hailing from the Redwood City/San Francisco area of California, we’re getting ready to head to our next stop (the Los Angeles area, specifically the Channel Islands).
Tsunami safety means we’re in big water in the middle of the night.
That. Sucked. For the dogs. For the humans. But we’re all safe. The boat is safe. And we’re safely tucked in back in the marina after an all clear. Thank you so much to S/V Savannah for letting us know when it was safe to come home. If we’re ever close enough to meet in person, Jollydogs owes you a sundowner or three.
Finally figured out wave period - what a game changer for crew morale (especially the pups)!
Berkeley to Half Moon Bay. Fairly calm to no winds, but the sea state was a bit wobbly and the potato patch lived up to the reputation of being a bit bumpy. It was still a good day and we saw many whales. We were at Westpoint harbor (lovely) for nearly two years, it now it’s time to start our more nomadic cruising life.
Westpoint Harbor has been our home for more than a year and a half. It’s been a great place to learn how to live on our boat and get everything settled. We planned to only be here a few weeks, so now it’s time to move on. Today starts a new era in our journey. We are heading to Berkeley for a couple of weeks and then we will continue our way down the coast to new places.
Heading for a rigging inspection to get ready for our next adventures. Unfortunately we hit a scheduling snafu, but had a good time getting out on the water.
We were supposed to be heading out of San Francisco and down to Los Angeles/Long Beach for a fun 3 day or so cruise. However, the wind on the nose and confused sea state made for hellish waves that left crew and our (normally jolly) dogs less than pleased. Everything seemed so tranquil until we got up to the Golden Gate. Once we popped out into the Potato Patch, we had waves that had us catching air - and the captain manually steering to try to keep us safe and as comfortable as possible under conditions. We turned around and managed to get a delightful anchorage spot in a mostly empty Aquatic Park Cove. Now to reminisce about how relatively calm the sail down from Seattle was last September, and figure out what to do about heading south from here in April.
