What a fun sail. Days like this make me so grateful Riley steered us toward performance sailing. I love my boat!! 🩵

Left one of the more beautiful anchorages we’ve seen in a while. It was blowing 18 then 16 then 14 on a beam swinging aft made for a sporting morning and a relaxing afternoon. Leaving early and arriving 60nm away shortly after midday is one of the reasons I love this vessel. Morale onboard is just excellent despite the challenges with living aboard on top of kids and some seriously anchoring unfriendly islands. Love my life 🫶🌋🌏

After a miscommunication about a potential meeting with the mayor of the island and sailing our OC tender in the beautiful blue inland lake we decided to head to Saipan basically because we had run out of food. Not the main staples but a bunch of things to make like easier with the kids. When we arrived we forgot to bring our phones and wallets to shore which is always a good indicator that we’re back in “Crusing Mode” again. Lenny spent a lot of time at the helm and it was a very smooth sail.

Cannot wait to get some sleep so we can truly appreciate this natural beauty!!

Another 400NM + down 🩵. Pulling into Maug tomorrow morning.. it’s an island made up of the remnants of a submerged volcanic caldera!! Can’t wait to see it. It’s been a rough few days at sea, very strange weather. Flew the drone in the rough weather and West’s hand copped it when catching it 😭

Day 2 of our passage to the southern islands of Japan! So far so good. We’re all really tired today but spirits are still high. The water is starting to get deeeeep 🤯

La Vagabonde and her crew just nailed our first big passage of the season.. couldn’t be happier! Off to hunt down some sake in this picture perfect little town to celebrate 💃🍶🥳 max speed was 20.4 knots btw!

Four seasons in one day.. gusty and squally, but spirits were high! One last stop in Osaka before we sail away from the mainland and into the open sea 🌊

First sail of the season.. here we go! 🥲 We’re setting off to pick up our four new crew members before heading further offshore toward Micronesia. It’s been a smooth start, though we’ve been beating upwind all day but we’re NOT COMPLAINING lol so happy to be here ✌️✌️

We’re hauling out La Vagabonde soon to kick off the repairs.. but for now, we’re making the most of our time in Japan 🇯🇵 with Riley’s dad and step mum! Tokyo Disneyland exceeded all expectations (it was seriously awesome?!! Darwin still doesn’t know how to feel about the rides clearly hahahaha), and tomorrow… we’ll finally hit the slopes for some snowboarding🏂

At 2am as we were sleeping, a fishing vessel ran into us.. head on. The noise was so loud, and the impact sent glasses smashing and clothes flying out of cupboards. We were headed out of the Seto Inland sea, when it happened. The days leading up to the crash were so spooky. We’re SO glad Ellie wasn’t sleeping in the area, when the fishing vessel hit us. The thought sends a shiver up my spine. I’ve been thinking a lot about intuition.. and how torn I am when it comes to trusting it. With Riley being such a science driven guy, I often find myself leaning into logic and evidence over gut feelings. But then, something like this happens, and it leaves me questioning EVERYTHING. Is there another layer to life that we can’t yet measure? Can messages truly be sent to us in ways we don’t fully understand? In this case, I can’t help but feel that little voice.. the one I dismissed.. was literally warning me about what was about to happen. It was! The second the fishing boat collided with us, the first thing I said in my head was “I knew it”. That honestly scared me more than the crash itself. It makes me really wonder.. how often do we overlook these whispers of intuition, writing them off as coincidence or overthinking? What do you think? Is intuition just another piece of the puzzle we don’t fully understand yet? ✨ Or is it just our subconscious piecing things together… and every now and then, a wild coincidence lines up so perfectly that it feels like something more?

A bit smelly, busy and with a lot of current but we made it into the Seto Inland Sea 🥳🥳

We had to move quickly, to avoid the incoming typhoon 🌀. Riley and Kai are currently remounting the engine after we hit a line, which caused a sudden jolt to the propeller and prop shaft.. straining the engine and bending the mounts. The mounts were already in poor shape having rusted.. since our shakedown cruise when the THEN new engine flooded with saltwater due to an improperly installed exhaust pipe 🙃🙃

Y’all need to get your butts to Japan for a sailing season. This place is unreal 🥲 This is Yakushima!

About to explore Amami. Looks insane!

Just cleared the island and we’re finally picking up speed now. Just started doing 11-13 knots in 13-15 knots of wind with the code 0 up. Won’t drop anchor in Amami till well after the sun has set, but it feels good to be moving again! Island hopping towards the inland sea for better protection from the typhoons. Okinawa was delightful. The people, the food, nature 🤯

We made it you guys. Champagne sailing for the remains of our passage! Checked into Japan this morning without any (big) dramas. The customs officials were so welcoming and lovely.. Keeping an eye on the weather and hopefully there’s nothing huge brewing in the next week, so we can stay, and see Okinawa in all its glory 🌳🌅🐬

The tropical depression to the north of us is creating the winds that you see here. Dancing with these pre-typhoon systems issssss dangerous? fun? Stressful? We should make landfall in Okinawa (where karate originated btw) in about 3 days, the forecasts are looking favourable now. Prefer to get my ass kicked by a 14yo brown belt than a typhoon 🥋 Wax on wax off. - Riley

24 hours of mostly motoring.. but as of lunch time today we’re well on our way with the gennaker up, in 12-15 knots of wind. Things are looking goooooood. 10-11 knots boat speed at 150 ahnnnd dooeeeeeepppp. Let ya know if we see any Chinese aircraft carriers 🧐

The Sulu Sea was a new one for us. No pirates.. thankfully.. nothing but crystal clear waters and fish galore 🥲 I’ll let Riley share the photo of him with his big fish he speared though, or he’ll get annoyed with me hahaha

Newly adjusted structural jib is up and we’re nearly ready to set off for good! Malaysia, Borneo river (to see elephants and orangutans 🥲) and the Philippines here we come!! Oh and we found some baby birds in a nest tucked up in the mainsail.. Not sure what to do with them now as the Mumma hasn’t come back? 💔💔

We attempted to leave Indonesia today to make the journey back to La Vagabonde in Malaysia.. but we had some issues with our visas (our fault 🥴) and couldn’t board the flight lol. Hopefully we have better luck tomorrow.. At least Bali is not a bad place to be stuck. Oh and I got a new film camera! Can’t wait to use it. Anyone shoot film?

We launched our new trimaran in November 2023 and embarked on an unforgettable journey 🥹. Our shakedown cruise to Borneo was anything but smooth lol. However, the adventure made it all worthwhile.. sailing up the Kinabatangan River, we encountered wild orangutans and crocodiles in their natural habitat. We also dove at Sipidan Island, one of the world’s best dive spots, where I saw more fish than I ever thought possible!! From there we ventured across the Sulu Sea, navigating pirate territory.. to reach the breathtaking Philippines. The water there reminded me of the Bahamas 🩵. Unfortunately we discovered a crack in our centerboard case, so we stopped in Subic Bay for repairs before setting off on a five day passage to Japan. Our first stop was Okinawa, where the Ryukyu Islands completely stole our hearts.. untouched natural wonders with incredible beauty. For me, Yakushima was the highlight.. an island of ancient forests and magical landscapes 😍. From there we sailed into the Seto Inland Sea, exploring culturally rich cities and remote, hidden islands far off the tourist trail. Along the way we discovered a deep love for Japan’s traditional onsens.. the perfect way to relax after long day at sea. The journey took an unexpected turn when a fishing boat collided with us in the middle of the night while we slept. Now we’re preparing for more repairs before setting off to explore a new destination! It’s been a wild ride on this new boat 🚀✨🤯 we feel so at home on her and just love her to bits. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
