We are Brandon and Kate, we own a 50’ steel commercial tuna fishing sailboat and fish the Pacific Ocean on the west coast of the United States! We work, and live aboard and really love what we do!
At port of Siuslaw selling our fish off the boat! 3.50/lb mention the app and get a discount! Glad to be here for a couple more weeks before the next big adventure.
Well we finished out trip and are currently sailing toward Florence Oregon where we are to sell our fish to the local community. We have 10k pound or more on board and with a staysail and double reefed main we are running the freezer system off of the auxiliary and still making headway overnight to our destination. Have about 800-900 fish on board! Who hoo. Ready to hit the docks and have a cold one and a nice long walk! We did good and heading in sailing the boat on the two year anniversary of owning the boat feels a lot like dreams a long time in the making!
We are having fun now, these are the days that make it all worth while. Nice calm ocean with a bit of breeze to keep the sails filled. On the downhill slide to get to Florence to sell our fish off the boat. Then resupply and do a couple projects and then make our way a bit further south. Maybe even back to where we met in sunny San Diego to do some highly migratory fishing down there! Stay tuned!
It’s a bit rough today. Was steady 30 through the night, hove to and just sat in it. Making some moves to get a bit south today because it’s the only viable option for not crossing all the tuna lines! Hoping for another killer day. We had 144 tuna day before yesterday and 15 yesterday! Eek! The bad weather killed the bite. But the sailing isn’t bad at this angle.
We had a good couple of last days fishing. 🎣 caught a bunch more big albacore! Another 38” albacore! That’s almost 40lbs! We started heading in and got 50 on our ride in. When the sun went down we had already made it past where we thought we were gonna stop and ended up in the cold water on the top side of the continental shelf. So since we had the right wind direction, we shut the motor down and just sailed through the night. Using hardly any fuel having the auxiliary run the freezer full of ten ton of albacore from our journey we have shared on here almost the whole way. Now we will be tied up in Florence, Oregon selling them off the boat to the end consumer, the people we get to meet and shake hands with, and make memories selling to and interacting with. What a great way to end a good fishing trip. Fishing hook and line tuna from a sailboat has been treating us well! Also a bonus video of a Thresher Shark chasing our tuna toys!
We needed up with a few hundred fish, kinda slow for what we are looking for but we still got in some decent fishing. Did have some notable things happen, bluefin tuna, a mako shark blowing a tuna out of the water and coming fully out of the water after it, and a thresher shark chasing out jigsaw and swatting at it with his tail! Short time in gonna result and then hit the water Tuesday morning.
