We are definitely not in the Bahamas anymore, but we still had such a fun day! Got moving before the sun came up and tried out nearly every sail configuration available on our way back to Belhaven. This sweet little town has become our East coast port and it always feels good to return here. We'll haul the boat again soon and head west to refill the cruising kitty! So grateful for all this season served up ππΌ
It's always so difficult to peel yourself away from the turquoise waters and dreamy anchorages of The Bahamas, but when this weather window lined up we had to take it! 3 days from Powell Cay to Wrightsville Beach - whew, what a run π€πΌ Starting the journey inside the Banks was dreamy. Smooth sailing into the night as we settled into a rhythm of 4 hour watches. By 5 am the next morning we had passed the comfort provided by the reef and found some big swell just as the wind started to putter out. We turned into a motorboat to make the ride more comfortable, forever grateful for that option!!! The winds were light and flukey, so we unfurled and furled the sail a hundred times but seas were calm and the miles came easy! We didn't take many photos, but will forever have memories of a rocket launch (and land!) dolphins playing around the boat, the most vivid rainbow there ever was, more flying fish than you could count and another 544 nautical miles under our belt!
Took the long way over to Marsh Harbour, motoring towards the best sun angles to make 18gal of fresh water and recharge the bats. Anchored in Marsh for a bit of chorin'. Any friends near by?
Sailed off the hook and made our way back to one of our favorite spots in the Abacos before I start my work day! Having the freedom and flexibility to do something I love before diving into responsibilities is EVERYTHING ππΌ Makes every last bit of adventure tax worthwhile!
Up at first light with LΓma on deck (learned our lesson last week!!) for an absolute stunner of a sail! Wind was stronger and a bit more upwind than forecasted, but with calm seas Falkor was in her happy place! We sailed our 9000th nautical mile together on this boat during this sail π₯³ππΌ super proud of us! Arriving back in The Abacos always feels like home π
If you've been to Northern Eleuthera, you know all about the Meek's Patch dance that happens whenever a blow rolls through. We decided to mix it up and sent it over to Royal Island to set ourselves up with a spectacular Saturday to go splorin' π’π€Ώ
Made our way North in an absolute washing machine and spent all 10 hours on this DDW run wishing we'd hoisted the dinghy on deck. With every building wave Lima launched forward, punting the big boat, slamming back and at one point she punted the outboard on the rails so hard the outboard prop broke! After hours of rolling, we flew through current cut at 9.2 knots and dropped the hook in what looked like a calm anchorage. We rolled all night long. ππ And now the dance around Meeks Patch / Spanish Wells begins as the impending storm approaches.
Another unforgettable day at sea! Excellent motor sail across pancake seas with another big Mahi on the hand line!!!
Cruising from Cambridge Cay to Shroud Cay at about 3 knots was the perfect way to start our slow migration North. Excited to explore one more stop in the Exumas before continuing onward!
Celebrating @Steve with a motor-sail to another new place! Scored the last mooring ball in Cambridge Cay - so stoked to explore this area!!!
Took advantage of the calm weather & motored our way through the coral head gauntlet to The Exumas! Was super nervous about this route when I looked at the charts, but it actually wasn't that bad when the sun was shining bright. Satellite overlay saved us when a few clouds tried to ruin the fun. Happy to be on the other side of that π«£ It's our first time in the Exumas and we've got the next month to explore! Please share all your recommendations in the comments!
Super light winds and calm seas made for an unforgettable day on the water. Thought this would be a motor but we got a few great hours of sailing in, caught our first Mahi and dropped the hook at egg island for a swim! Ended up motoring around to Russel Island for the night to avoid the death rolls at Egg. Loved the little beach bar!
Great day for a motor sail from Man-o-War Harbour to the Southern Abacos! We made water, had a lovely visit from half a dozen Dolphins and soaked up some much needed sunshine after a couple stormy days! Eleuthera bound later this week!!
It was time to break free from the velcro in Marsh Harbour. Motor straight into the wind or sail 10+ nm's around the Sea of Abaco to go 4nm? You should know by now that we'd choose the latter. Made some water, won an unexpected race against some friends, and tacked our way upwind to Man-of-War. Grabbed a mooring for a couple days. β΅ Such a beautiful day on the water!
Super fun downwind run back to Marsh. After a few weeks of exploring, it's time to re-up on veggies. Looks like a great weather window for some southing is forming for the end of the week! π€πΌβ΅
Such a beautiful day on the water! Started with a morning dinghy ride through the mangroves at Snake Cay, then sailed our way back to Hopetown for the songwriters festival in a couple days. Who's going? We used (almost) every sail on board today and had an absolute blast tacking our way upwind at the end! It's really nice to have the option to motor, we're forever grateful for it, but it sure is a lot more fun to sail!! And man does Falkor love to sail upwind π€©π€©
Hot tip: when crossing shallows at low tide, make sure the boat's got a good heal angle π
Jobes cay is a real gem and we scored a perfect day to explore it and enjoy a few hours at the sand bar! What a treat
Took advantage of the calm weather and rode high tide through the Don't Rock Passage! Pretty cool shortcut - had 6+ feet of water under the boat the whole time π€πΌ
Sailed off the hook and cruised along on an upwind sail to Green Turtle Cay. Light upwind sails are Falkor's sweet spot! Crew is happy, boat is happy! What a treat it is to be here again π€©
Lots of sail changes and liiiiigght wind but we were smiling non-stop all day! So happy to be back in the Sea of Abaco!
