Kona, HI
I’ve been sailing out of Kona (Honokohau Harbor) for a year and a half, on three different boats, with Aloha Community Sailing Club. From no sailing experience, to a skipper for the club. On average I sail once a week.
Took out a newbie on the Cal 20. 6-10 knot wind . Great day for a sail until the wind died completely.
Double handed on Sigrid, an Ericson 23. Beautiful day for a sail. 8 knots wind, 2’ swell. We won both races!
Double handing the Cal 20. The spinner dolphins were quite active while motoring out. We had a pretty consistent 10 knots of wind, with 2’ swell for most of the day, but it died down to almost nothing in the last 20 minutes. Great sail.
Double handing the Cal 20. 10-12 knots of wind, 3-4’ swell. A little choppy, but all in all, a fun day.
Cal 20 spinnaker lesson. First time flying a spinnaker. 6 knot wind, 2’ swell. All went well, had a great day.

Champagne sailing on the Cal 20. 6-10 knots of wind. Went south to Kailua bay this week.
4-6 knot wind, 2’ swell. Champagne sailing all day. Great sail on the Cal 20.
Double handing the Cal 20. 6-10 knot wind, 2’-3’ swell, great day for a sail. Saw some spinner dolphins returning to harbor.
Sailing on the Cal20. 8-10 knot wind, 4’ swell. Good sail, saw a few dolphins.
Double handing the Cal 20. 6-8 knots of wind, 3’-4’ swell. All went well.
8-12 knots of wind, with gusts to 15. 2’-4’ swell. A good sporty sail. All went well.
Double handed on Mahina Pua, a Cal-20. Only 2-4 knots of wind, and 2-4’ swell. Swell was coming at random angles, and the sails were luffing, and back winding on both sides. We decided to call it early, and motored back in. On a brighter note, we saw one whale about 100 yards from the boat, unfortunately I wasn’t fast enough to get a picture.
Took out some new sailors with my instructor today. 6-8 knot wind, 2’ swell. Lots of tack and gybe practice. All went well.
Double handed on Sigrid, an Erickson 23. 10-15 knots, with gusts to 20. 4-6’ swell. One reef in the main. All went well, it was a fun ride. Apparently I stopped the tracker before we got back to the harbor. This was the most extreme weather I’ve experienced as acting captain, not much for most of you, but Kona is usually champagne sailing. I welcome the challenge.
Took an out of town guest for our weekly sail, on the Cal20 Mahina Pua. 6-8 knot wind, 1-2’ swell. All went well… yet another great sail in Kona. It was a bit hazy today, due to the Kiluea eruption, but beautiful nonetheless the less.
