Brand new Sailor who full sent and bought a 1987 Prout Snowgoose Elite, Thalia. Learning to sail and live aboard as we explore the east coast of the US and Bahamas. Need a hand with something? Reach out! I need the experience 😅
Long day of waking up before light and arriving right before dark, but happy we had a nice calm motor south! Can’t wait to get back to clear water and beaches again! Couldn’t do it without @Michaela
The weather was a bit rough this morning, with a small craft advisory and 20 knots of wind, but we full sent it and hand steered for the first few hours up and down 2-4 ft waves, until the day settled into a manageable upwind sail. Feels so good to be back out on the water with @Michaela
It started off as a pretty easy trip to Elizabeth city with enough wind to get the sails out, it turned into a crab pot filled nightmare! But we made it here safe and crabless either way. Dismal swamp appears to have reopened, but will likely wait out the weather here in an anchorage all to ourselves. Not a bad place to spend a week it seems. Absolute shout out to @Michaela for being the best crab pot spotter around!
Even though the dismal swamp is still closed, we are looking for the next place to spend a week and Elizabeth city seems like the place to go! Was a very long, but calm, day so we busted out the swing to sit in while watching for crab pots 😂 If anyone has any recs for Elizabeth City please give us a shout! Shout out to @Michaela for doing a ton of canal driving as I cut up my hands catching a drone 😂
We have finally pushed past Hatteras and should be good for Hurricane season! We still are making our way up to the Chesapeake, but are thinking about avoiding the dismal swamp this year. This trip consisted of killing 40 something horse flies that were non stop attacking us. Makes me worried about going more inland and losing the breeze.
Wanted to test our engine out after an oil change and fuel filter swaps! Had plenty of wind to help get us there even faster. We did pop a fuse for our windlass when picking up the anchor due to a jam, ended up pulling it up by hand and swapping the fuse out under way. All is well now.
Lovely trip in the ICW to Oriental! Took a bit longer than I would have liked due to some currents that weren’t on the chart, but enjoyed the journey! Very different being up here than anything we’ve experienced so far, forests on both sides in small channels, opening up to nice wide rivers and bays. Hoping we can see more small towns on our trip and see what people like about the east coast!
A rolly overnight sail to Beaufort, ending our ocean sailing until the end of hurricane season! We will be taking the ICW the rest of the way to the Chesapeake! Does anyone have suggestions on places to stop?!? Heading towards Annapolis for the boat show, but would love to see some places along the way!
An uneventful motor sail where everything went just fine. Sails like this one really make me want to figure out getting a spinnaker so we can do more light wind sailing. Super excited to get into more of these smaller beach towns and see what the northeast is all about!
It is kind of wild that we went to a new country (the Bahamas) before we went to a new state, but finally making our way north! Overall sail went off without a hitch! We had enough wind to spend most of the time sailing, the weather held solid with the waves staying small, and we even had a group of dolphins swim with us for 5 minutes! Getting through the inlet with 3 knots of current coming out was brutal, but the Ft Johnson anchorage was wide open and easy enough to drop the hook in the dark. Finally a spot to take a bit of a breather and hang with some friends. Anyone have any recommendations!?!
No better time than now eh @bri ! Need to start making large hops north so took Brian’s advice and just went for it! We spent the day trying to sail anytime we could and night dodging between storms, unfortunately motoring when the wind was dead, but @Michaela and I pulled up this morning still floating and didn’t hit anything, so going to call that a win! Still can’t believe how glassy it gets out on the ocean sometimes. 1/4 of the way north, going to be a busy couple of weeks!
Trying to head north with this whacky weather is a bit rough! Hoping we can catch a solid window to take a chunk out of it soon, but until then we are resting up in ft pierce! Hit our first squall while approaching the inlet so had to motor through it and wait for it to blow over, only for Sunday to be thundering and hailing on us as we tried avoiding other boats in this goofy anchorage. Can’t wait to get up to the Chesapeake and slow down! Shout out to @Michaela for getting through it with me! Couldn’t do it without her ❤️
After two weeks in the yard and an overheating engine right as we splashed, we are finally back to moving. Just a short trip to get to the inlet for tomorrow! Have to start heading north and can hopefully catch a weather window to get away from these bridges.
Wow what a day! Shout out to @SV_JOJO for coming out and being our absolute hero while @Michaela and I were throwing up all the way across the Gulf Stream! Anchoring in West Palm Beach inlet was tricky under sail, but we made it happen! Grabbed a tow boat who put us in an anchorage near by the marina for a night! Feeling anxious about getting into the boat yard for the first time but looking forward to getting the boat back in working order!
Due to an unforeseen repair, we have to head back to Florida to haul out. Trying to hit a better weather window we decided to duck into Great Sale Cay for a half day to hit the Gulf Stream at first light. Thanks to @SV_JOJO for flying out and helping us sail off anchor for the first time, route planning, and working towards getting us back home!
Would love to be sailing but motoring around the Bahamas isn’t so bad. Or maybe we just have to stop wanting to go upwind all the time 🤔 Hopefully the wind is behaving when we start heading back 😂 Looking forward to seeing some turtles and checking out green turtle cay! Anyone know if it’s safe to swim around here? Need to get back to cleaning the bottom of our boat. Thanks!
Unfortunately we did not have the wind today, but had a very easy motor over to fox town. Really looking forward to getting some groceries and fuel and then heading off to more remote destinations with wildlife!
What were we thinking! Started tracking a touch late, left the channel before dark which was a little frightening. Wind and weather mostly good through the sail, but by the time we arrived and went to pull in the sails both furlers were jammed. Was a bit of a nightmare of rewrapping them while throwing up going straight into the wind, but we managed to get them in and get to anchor. All cleared in and ready to see what the Bahamas has to offer! Anyone have recs for Bimini? Where to get fuel? Cool things to see?
We are going to try to go to the Bahamas for the first time this Sunday, anyone have any tips to make things go smooth? Where to go after? Etc? We are so new! Would love to grab a video call or chat things through if anyone has the time! Thanks!
Couldn’t ask for a better sail! 10-15 knots behind us the whole way. What a night and day difference than pounding into the waves with 20-25 knots that we experienced Monday. So Stoked to finally be out here!
Can’t say it wasn’t a stressful day! But wow do you build confidence practicing on a dock where you only have a few boat lengths to completely 180 in! Was cool to see the area but wow is the open ocean the place for me 😂
First day of sailing lessons! First day on the ocean, first day through bridges, first day in the ICW, could not be more stoked to be learning how to move our boat. Did a terrible job taking pictures because we were seeing 6-7 ft waves in the gulfstream so we’re feeling quite sick, but here are some of day 2, going through bridges, anchoring, docking. Can’t wait to be free!
