SV Lola
Fort Lauderdale
Started sailing roughly since birth. After dedicating the better part of the past 40 years to working intensively in IT and telecoms, I’m ready to turn the tables and focus on enjoying life, family and friends. Original from Seattle, I’ve lived for 30+ years in Spain. Now my official residence is in Florida but I still live part time in Spain spending several months of the year in Madrid and Sevilla where we have homes and where my wife and my two daughters were born. We love to travel and have been all over Europe. We’re excited to discover the Bahamas and the Caribbean I’m launching SV Lola, a new Leopard 42, with plans to spend the coming season cruising the waters of Florida and the Bahamas.
We had to stop in Miami. This is a really uncomfortable destination for cruisers. Getting onto land from the dinghy requires a higher degree in acrobatics. Getting to Customs and Border Protection office is a real pain. Anchorages were full of party boats and the Memorial Day weekend boat traffic was unbearable. We couldn’t get out of there soon enough. It was a sporty ride to Fort Lauderdale but the worst waves we’ve seen, by far, were getting through Government Cut. Aside from the sea waves and wind against the outgoing tide we had to deal HUGE boat wake in all directions. We dropped the hook in lake Sylvia for the night and made our way up the river early this morning to arrive at our dock at high tide. It’s nice to be back on our dock.
We waited for a couple of days for squall and thunderstorm activity to dissipate then motored across the Florida Strait to Miami. The water in Bimini is pretty amazing We initially wanted to hang out in Key Biscayne and No Name Harbor for the weekend but it turns out CBP wanted us to go pay them a visit. It’s a real pain in the ass to go to CBP in Miami. I’ll definitely avoid that in the future. At least we’re cleared into the US.
We’ve made our way North from George Town stopping to rest and see some of the key sights of the Exumas Now we’re in Bimini waiting for some squalls and thunderstorms to ease off the Florida coast before we cross home
We left Staniel and made it down to Prime Cay to spend the night and have a quick snorkel before continuing down to George Town. Prime Cay is a great spot right next to a deep cut onto the Exuma Sound. It was very quiet. Not another boat in sight.
We anchored at Big Major for a couple of nights. Although the anchorage was full of boats there was still plenty of room. In S or SE wind this anchorage is more protected and was very quiet at night. It was a perfect vantage point for us to get to all the “attractions” but still enjoy some relaxed, quiet comfort aboard. I think we got to see everything: swimming pigs 🐷, the Grotto, something that’s vitally needed at times: restaurants and bars
Looking forward to snorkeling in the Aquarium
Finally made it to Warderick Wells. This has been on my bucket list for a long time.
